Queens were confirmed as champions of the second division last night after a scintillating performance at Forfar  saw them cruise to a 6-0 win. The victory also earned Queens the accolade of becoming the first team in Britain this season to be crowned as champions, after they  swept aside a Brechin team who, prior to the game were unbeaten in 11 games.

The game was less than a minute old when leading scorer Nicky Clark, fired Queens into the lead, and when Michael Paton added a second after just 3 minutes later, the 400 or so Queens fans who had made the long journey up, realised that the night was going to be a memorable one in the history of the club.

After 18 minutes it was basically championship won for Queens when Brechin defender Moyes put through his own goal, and when Paton scored the goal of the game with a tremendous drive from 25 yards out, the first renditions of ‘championees’ was heard around the ground. The scoring for the half was not finished , and Queens added number five almost on half-time, as Clark became the first player in the SFL to reach the target of 25 league goals this season. Brechin were demoralised, but in fairness to them, not many teams would have lived with Queens in that first period as the football they played was at times, different class, and Brechin may have been better employed by having their own ball, as they were hardly getting a touch of the match ball such was the dominance of the Queens performance.

Although Queens only added one more goal to their tally in the 2nd half, they certainly could of had more as their domination of the game continued. As it was, they had to make do with just the one as Gavin Reilly scored a thoroughly well deserved goal after just short of the hour mark. Things got even bleaker for Brechin when defender McLaughlan was sent off for a late challenge on Clark which earned him a second yellow. With the game moving to it’s conclusion, Queens played out the remaining time by keeping the ball for long periods  without really looking to add to their goals tally, as eventually the final whistle signalled the start of  the celebrations for players and fans alike.

Minutes after the final whistle, the fans gathered around the main stand to greet their team, and as the champagne was sprayed, and the singing began, the aim of  winning the title had been realised, along with the fact that it had been clinched with such a resounding and victory. Well done to Allan Johnston, Sandy Clark, and their group of players on becoming Scottish 2nd division champions for season 2012/13.
